BELIEFS

I explore the issues of boundaries in my owrk.

I understand decoration or ornamentation has been percieved as empty or meaningless art. Close observation however either by the naked eye or magnification reveals detail which could be viewed as pattern or decorative. Therefore observing detail of a seemingly bland image often uncovers great complexity.

Questioning this complexity of images raises the issues of abstration- when does an image cease to be representational and become abstracted? Can close exploration of detail be classed as abstraction or is it representation at micro / macro level?

DESIRES

I require the subject matter to seduce me in its initial presentation. I need to want to explore it further, look at it more closely.
I wish to hold the moment, stop time, and recreate the void to enable closer observation. See it, feel it, be it.
I love colour, the beautiful, bright, vibrancy, cool and subtle, wide ranging and limiting. In harmony and juxtaposed. I want to recreate these elements.
I love possibility.
I love spontaneity.
I love my soul to be calmed and soothed by the beauty around me.
I wish to use my paintings to observe detail and explore bounderies.
I want to dispell the negative conotation around the concept of decoration.

PROCESS

It is commonly the case that the digital camera will assist me in the encapsulation and presentation of possibility.
I find oil paint the most suitable material to use to discover the image within the image. It is the obscured which intrigues me. With paint it is possible to feel the subject matter. This process of painting is a process of discovery.
Decoration and ornamentation are a process I use to feel the subject matter in the way a man without sight feels another’s face to ‘read’ the features.

INTENT

I aim to continue working with all these concepts to explore further the question of where boundaries are and how they can be blured or crossed.
